Modern operating system design makes it difficult for applications to cause kernel faults as often as occured in the past. We have some less than fond memories of Windows 98, which would Blue Screen if you looked at it funny. Today, the most common culprits for kernel faults are bad hardware, bad drivers, and bad anti-virus software.

If you get a kernel fault, blue screen, or black screen, don’t panic. There’s a couple of things that you can check on your own before calling in the cavalry.

1. Check if you’ve changed anything. Have you recently installed a software update, or new piece of hardware? If so, uninstall it.
2. Update your Operating System and major drivers from the manufacturer. Some manufacturers play nicely and automatically update, others you need to hunt through a website to find all the updates.

Both Windows and Macintosh computers can be configured to create a “memory dump” file if they have a fault. This file will allow a trained computer technician to see exactly what isn’t playing nicely with the rest of your system.
